Mott MacDonald Bentley and JBA Bentley project success at the ICE Yorkshire and Humber awards

Mott MacDonald Bentley’s (MMB) project at Killinghall Sewage Treatment Works – delivered to meet the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) compliance standards - has been recognised as the ‘Net Zero award’ winner at the annual Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Yorkshire and Humber awards. Additionally, three further projects delivered by JBA Bentley and MMB received project award Certificates of Excellence and Commendation.

The Net Zero award is presented to schemes that set new standards in lowering their carbon footprint in the Yorkshire and Humber region. The ICE judges highly commended the Killinghall project for its commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.

They praised the team’s “impressive approach to addressing carbon reduction in infrastructure through the principles of PAS2080”, highlighting the clever design involved in ‘rethinking the process and repurposing existing infrastructure, saving around 53% of embodied carbon.”

Delivered in collaboration with Yorkshire Water, the project team at Killinghall are implementing a solution to upgrade the existing works and improve water quality in the River Nidd, to ensure Yorkshire Water meets its WINEP obligations for phosphorus (P) removal.

Additionally, MMB’s multi-project work delivering Yorkshire Water’s Storm Overflow Programme – a £180m investment aiming to improve storm overflow capacity across the region – also received a Certificate of Commendation.

Elsewhere on the night, JBA Bentley teams were delighted to receive recognition for two schemes delivered with the Environment Agency – Holderness Drain Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS), in Hull, and the Meadowgate Don Regulators, within the Rother Valley Country Park.

The two-part scheme at Holderness, comprising of a new pumping station and a flood storage Aquagreen, has significantly increased the levels of flood protection to thousands of homes, schools and businesses in Hull – a high-risk area prone to flooding. The judges awarded a Certificate of Excellence, commenting that the scheme “demonstrated excellence in its aim to provide further resilience to the City of Hull.”

Meanwhile, the JBA Bentley team involved in the replacement of the historic Meadowgate regulator on the River Rother also picked up a Certificate of Commendation. The project has improved the resilience of the important asset, reducing the risk of flooding to settlements within the River Don catchment. Comments from the judges highlighted the scheme’s “impressive approach to design and noteworthy temporary works, with the new bypass syphon saving considerable energy.”

Congratulations to the teams – and to all those who were recognised at the event.
