Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) projects
Broadholme Water Recycling Centre (WRC)
£35m investment in improving phosphorus removal capabilities and increasing full flow to treatment in Northamptonshire. The project involves installing new sequential batch reactor tanks, upgrading the power supply, and enhancing infrastructure to meet new environmental requirements and accommodate population growth. Read more.

Embsay Water Treatment Works (WTW)
A standalone 24 ML/d water treatment works, providing clean water to over 15,000 people. MMB reduced the whole life carbon on the project by 77%. The final solution was a single precast concrete structure consisting of new three-compartment contact tanks, a clean backwash tank, and a drywell pumping station. Read more.

Esholt Sewage Treatment Works (STW)
MMB successfully collaborated with Yorkshire Water to deliver vast improvements at Esholt Sewage Treatment Works. This treats most of the sewage flows from Bradford and parts of northern Leeds, with a flow to full treatment of 3200 l/s. Read more.

Mosswood Water Treatment Works (WTW)
Located near Derwent Reservoir and serving around 1 million customers, Mosswood WTW was designed to improve water quality by installing a new run-to-waste (RTW) system and constructing an attenuation lagoon. Read more.

Monkmoor Sewage Treatment Works (STW)
MMB collaborated with Severn Trent to develop a solution to meet tightening phosphorus permits at Monkmoor STW. It is the UK’s first large scale installation of MABR technology to enhance ammonia removal. Read more.

Gouthwaite Reservoir
MMB delivered the successful design and construction of a large diameter emergency drawdown siphon at one of Yorkshire Water’s largest reservoirs. Capable of 13,500 l/s, it will allow for a 5m reduction in water level within five days in emergencies. Read more.

Sluvad Water Treatment Works (WTW)
Working with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water MMB removed manganese and iron through the first UK water industry application of jet mixing for coagulant mixing at a water treatment works. Read more.

Lower Gornal Sewage Treatment Works (STW)
The project successfully implemented tertiary treatment upgrades to meet tightened phosphorus and ammonia consents, saving over £20 million by retaining the site and avoiding costly pipeline installations. Read more.

Newthorpe Sewage Treatment Works (STW)
MMB collaborated with Severn Trent to deliver improvements at Newthorpe Sewage Treatment Works (STW) in Nottinghamshire. The project aimed to double its capacity to 649 l/s and improve effluent quality by reducing phosphorus concentration to less than 0.2 mg/l. Read more.

Red Doles CSO
MMB collaborated with Yorkshire Water to refurbish an existing combined sewer overflow that had reached the end of its asset life. This involved installing three new 2.5m hydraulic screens, making structural modifications, and removing the existing concrete weir wall and roof slab. Read more.

Springwell Service Reservoir
Alongside Northumbrian Water, MMB designed and constructed a 43 ML semi-precast concrete reservoir to enhance water storage and resilience for approximately 250,000 properties in South Tyneside and Wearside. Read more.

West Hallington Reservoir
MMB developed a design solution of two 700mm diameter siphons to improve drawdown capability, allowing the reservoir to be lowered by 4.8m in 8 days. Read more.

Witches Oak
MMB collaborated with Severn Trent’s Green Recovery Programme: combining natural solutions with conventional infrastructure. The project aims to develop low-carbon water resources, improve river
water quality, and enhance ecosystem services while ensuring water supply resilience. Read more.

Several JBA Bentley projects - our environmentally focused integrated design and build business - are also featured on the site and in 2024's publication.
JBA Bentley (JBAB) projects
Don Regulators
The Don Regulators comprise three regulator gates on the River Rother that are owned, operated, and maintained by the Environment Agency (EA). JBA-Bentley worked with the EA to reduce flood risks and improve fish migration across the River Rother catchment with online flood gates and a bespoke full-channel fish pass. Read more.

Holderness Flood Alleviation
This project aimed at enhancing flood resilience in the Humber region. JBA-Bentley undertook the design and construction of new 10m³/s ‘online’ pumping station at East Hull and flood storage aquagreen. Read more.
